If you want to go the online route, I found doing online courses through a university in your area works the best. Do it that way
Not at all. these days everyone is doing on-line education. A lot of employers encourage that and many reward there employee for that. Go for it.
An online masters degree from a reputable, brick and mortar university can be worth it, if you can't possibly get to a campus based program. But an online PhD is absolutely not worth the paper it's printed on. The place you get your PhD from, and how you get it, is EXTREMELY important to employers, academic or industry. An online PhD could actually make you unemployable. Please be very cautious.
Online programs continue to grow in popularity and acceptance. Many of the finest campus programs have begun offering degrees online because of the advantages they offer. Additionally most programs do not indicate whether your degree was earned online or on campus. That being said not all schools are the same. Just as how some campus programs are not viewed favorably by potential employers same thing goes for online schools. I would recommend contacting a number of schools to see which one is the best fit for you and has the best reputation. I would also make sure that any school you are considering is accredited. I did a search for accredited online degrees and this site seems to have good information and some schools to check out that offer masters degrees, graduate certificate programs and phd degrees.
