Should military officers have college degrees, enlisted experience or both?
Today, to become a occupation branch qualified military officer, you have to get a college degree or the equivalent therof a military academy degree , and you have to complete what amounts to about 32 to 42 weeks of military training, including ROTC and military academy training. The question is, would it be better to require officers to serve as enlistedman for a couple of years before going to become an officer? Would it be bertter to require them to work their way all the way up to E 6 or E 7 before becoming officers? Would it be better to open it up to people who don't have college degrees, particularly non comissioned officers? I am of the opinion that a college degree is unnecessary. You simply need to have a certain level of basic education and intellegence the same perhapps that you would need to be an enlisted nuclear reactor technician or a intellegence , and have completed the military training part of the comissiooning and qualification process. I am also of the opinion that it would be better if people who were officer candidates were required to serve as an enlistedman for at least a year or two, maybe even acheive a certain rank, such as E 4, E 5 or E 6. That would be somewhat difficult to implement all at one time, though. You would not need ROTC, which I think is a mistake anyway, and OCS could be done at the military academies. Instead of teaching people a whole lot of stuff for 4 years, they could teach officer candidates who would already have a few years in the service military skills, for 4 to 6 months.I asked this question several months back and got a lot of what seemed to me to be non answers really insults , as if my question and opinion were so idiotic as to be unworthy of serious consdieration. . In particular, experience was questioned. FYI I have 8 years in the infantry 4 in an active duty airborne infantry battalion . I had 2 years of college when I joined the army. I completed 2 years of ROTC. I acheived the rank of sergeant E 5 . I also completed a bachelor's degree while in the army and and a masters degree after I got out. I have several freinds who are former NCOs and a couple who are former officers who share my opinion. In fact most lower enlisted and NCOs I have come across share my opinion, in general. I cant speak for the officers. In my opinion leadership ability comes from experience leading soldiers. You get some of that in ROTC and the academies and OCS, but that is really nothing compared to the what you learn as a platoon leader in just a few months particularly in combat . ROTC is a mistake because the discipline is extremely lax, and, therefore it not only doesn't teach discipline and leadership, it teaches the wrong things, undiscipline and bad leadership. I get the impression that the same could be said of the service academise, from my very limited view.Well, of course you can enlist and then get a degree, or visa versa, and then go to OCS. That's pretty common. The Army even has the green to gold program, and the warrant officer programs, and they sometimes even send NCOs with 2 years of college or more to OCS and let them finish their degrees as non promotable officers between OCS and officer basic course, but those programs are very limited.

Getting 2 college degrees in very unrelated fields?
Is that a stupid idea. I really want to get a degree in graphic design and child care. I was thinking maybe getting my bachelors in graphic design and my associates in child care. I was thinking that way I have options of what kind of a job I want after I graduate. Also I was thinking that I could mabye work in a daycare or something and then do graphic design freelance on the side. Does this would like a good idea, or a really stupid idea?? Thanks I looked it up and a lot of the basic education requirements are the same for both the child care and the graphic design program. Also I am pretty sure I will be able to test out of a lot of the basic classes such as math and english.

My boyfriend is under the impression that after high school he won't have to take any classes like math, English, or science. He wants to go to this school that specializes in the entertainment industry. All that's required to get in is a high school diploma GED and a letter of recommendation, yet they don't actually teach regular courses there.
